Cleveland Browns Logos for 2015 – Flatter, Bolder…Adorable?
Today, the Cleveland Browns unveiled their new, “flatter” logos for 2015. Most are underwhelmed at the very subtle changes but, as both a graphic designer and a Browns fan, I am happy with the update. (No, not just because I get to keep all my old logo stuff!)
What is Flat Logo Design?
It’s a minimalist design aesthetic that removes any impression of a 3D effect. Flat design has taken the graphics world by storm of the past couple of years, some credit Apple for staying on the forefront of this trend. Many popular companies are swapping out their drop shadows, strokes, and gradients for bright colored, solid shapes. This presents a cleaner look, and is more visible on mobile devices.
Was it Time for a Change?
In my opinion, yes. The Browns are simply following design trends and keeping a fresh look. While the old Browns logo was pretty much flat already, the 2015 design has eliminated the stroke around the text, and switched to a bolder font. The orange color was also updated to a more vivid shade, which the Browns say “matches the passion of their fans”. While this was very thoughtful of the designers, I’m sure its just a nice way of saying “the old orange was boring”. The helmet logo only had a few color changes. The facemask is now brown instead of white, maybe to reflect the uniform updates to be revealed in April 14th, 2015?
Team president Alec Scheiner commented
“…the evolved logos, what we’re doing at the stadium and then what we do with the uniforms will help us connect with our younger fan base too.”
The Dawg Pound Logo
For those who’ve never been to the Cleveland Browns’ First Energy Stadium, the “Dawg Pound” is the bleacher section behind the home end-zone, known for it’s “extremely zealous fanbase”. I have mixed feeling about this update. I think the old bulldog logo was in need of an update, but not into a Disney character! While cleaner and easier to reproduce, this logo is much less intimidating than it’s older counterpart.
After hearing some nasty rumors over the last week and seeing some terrible “fan-made” predictions, I welcome the new changes to the Cleveland Browns Logo. The Browns are just following design trends… don’t be so hard on them!
